A brief letter to the Observer from Fayetteville, N.C. resident Nancy Sahkir

Darryl Wayne Turner became the 10th person in North Carolina to die after being stunned by law enforcement with a Taser. Tasers are being used more frequently by police, but North Carolina's policies on Taser use lag behind other states, as noted by the N.C. Justice Center, the N.C. NAACP, N.C. Chapter of National Association of Social Workers and others.

There must be clear guidelines on Taser use on vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, the elderly and the disabled.

Some guidelines may seem like common sense, but that's all the more reason to clearly define limits for Taser use. It will make law enforcement more trustworthy in the community's eyes and it will make us all safer. How many more must die before law enforcement in North Carolina is given guidelines on how to more safely use Tasers?

So, let's see if we can possibly all reduce our risk of being tased...

Pending an approved taser exemption list:

Children: Newborns - age 11... don't grow up. Ever.
Adolescents: Age 12 - 17... Pray for dwarfism. Only consume child-like foods and beverages in public. Hold your parent's hand at every available opportunity. Don't smoke or drink alcohol. Never speak. Carry youthful toys and accessories.
Young Adults: Purchase used personal mobility equipment. Better yet, simulate a permanent disability such as blindness, or get very careless with dangerous power tools. If these options aren't viable, invest in belly pillows for that pregnant look. This works for men now also.
Middle-Aged Adults: See "Young Adults" section, but avoid fake pregnancy. Fake advanced age instead.
Mature Adults: Do not speak, sing or dance in public. Avoid any semblance of decent ambulatory movement. Do not smile as displays of teeth can be mistaken for aggressive facial expressions. Remove dentures if necessary.
